Some of the upregulated genes comprised genes with important functions in the immune response and proliferation, such as
claudin 4 (CLDN4), orosomucoid 1 (ORM1), insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP2), cytochrome P450, family 26, subfamily A, polypeptide 1 (CYP26A1), and growth arrest-specific 1 (GAS1).
TJ contains a complex of proteins spanning the intercellular cleft (occludin and
claudin).
The most important TJ proteins in the intestinal mucosa are ZO-1, occludin, and
claudins [7], and the expression of all 3 in the intestine are decreased by infection with ETEC K88 [24, 30].
Tight junctions have several membrane and cytoplasmic proteins [33] ; some of these such as occludins,
claudins, and zona occludins (ZO proteins) have been well studied [34-38].

Little to no expression was observed at any time point in either the biopaper or PET coculture systems for genes gap junction [beta]4 (GJB4), gap junction [beta]6 (GJB6), tight junction protein 3 (TJP3), and
claudin 3 (CLDN3) (Table 2).
