ciliateany member of the class Ciliata in older classifications (usually placed in the subphylum Ciliophora), members of which possess cilia (see CILIUM during some part of the life cycle for locomotion and/or food capture. In more modern classifications ciliates are given kingdom-equivalent status. See CLASSIFICATION. Ciliates are said to be the most specialized of the protozoans and have various organelles to perform particular processes. There are more than 5500 species and they are common in both fresh and salt water.
