LCD

abbreviation for liquid crystal display, a video display device that is more compact and uses less electrical power than the conventional cathode ray tube (CRT). Laptop computers use LCD displays. LCD monitors are frequently used instead of CRTs for desktop computers. An LCD is composed of electrically sensitive liquid crystals laminated between layers of plastic. Application of small electrical currents alters the orientation of the crystals, producing the image.

corneal dystrophy, lattice type 1

An autosomal dominant (OMIM:122200) form of corneal dystrophy characterised by wispy, greyish, cotton-like threads limited to a zone between the centre of the cornea and the periphery, with slowly progressive loss of vision by the fifth or sixth decade of life.

Nearly all e-book devices currently in the market use E Ink's electrophoretic display technology, with a small number--such as Fujitsu's FLEPia--using cholesteric LCD (liquid crystal display) technology.
Rather than using e-ink, the device is based on the company's cholesteric LCD technology, which like e-ink, doesn't need power to maintain text or images.
The primary competitive technology is an evolution of LCD technologies, using Cholesteric LCD (ChLCD) and Bistable Twisted Nematic technologies, based on reflecting light from a swirl of molecules.
