Circulatory cerebral occlusion that produces varying degrees of neurologic deficits. Ischemic strokes account for 85% of all attacks; most are caused by thrombus formation or embolus due to atherosclerosis. Cardiogenic embolic stroke, usually caused by atrial fibrillation, is the second major cause of acute ischemic stroke.
