burst forming unit-erythrocyte cell

a population of bone marrow-residing progenitor cells derived from CFU-S cells, responsible for the formation of erythrocytes; they require low concentrations of erythropoietin to undergo a "burst" of mitotic activity to form a very large number of CFU-Es.
