bowel lengthening

bowel lengthening

A surgical operation used to treat the SHORT-BOWEL SYNDROME in children as an alternative to bowel transplantation. The procedure involves freeing a length of intestine from the mesentery, dividing it longitudinally, converting each half into a tube and connecting these end to end. The blood supply to each half must be carefully maintained.
