Lab medicine
noun A negative control specimen used in immunoassays and quality assurance in many lab tests. Blanks are processed in tandem with the test serum or tissue, differing in that a primary antibody is not added in the first step; blanks assure a true negative result, allowing comparison of a possibly positive result with a known negative.
