biorhythms

The inherent periodicity, or cyclical nature, of many body functions such as the heart beat, respiration, menstruation, sleeping and waking, bowel PERISTALSIS, and body temperature. Some of these cyclical phenomena are under the control of a central biological clock based on a 24 hour ‘circadian’ rhythm. Melatonin secreted by the pineal gland in a cyclical manner and synchronized by daylight and darkness is the agent of this rhythm.
