biliary scan

An imaging procedure in which a radionuclide is injected intravenously to identify bile duct obstruction or cholecystitis.

Method
The radionuclide passes through the liver, and is excreted in the bile where it concentrates in the gallbladder; a gamma camera measures tracer radioactivity and generate images of the gallbladder and biliary system.
