a device available to trained first-responder personnel or laypeople; can provide electrical countershock to a victim with the appropriate dysrhythmia without requiring the user's making a decision.

a portable apparatus used to restart a heart that has stopped. It is programmed to analyze cardiac rhythms automatically and indicate to a health professional when to deliver a defibrillating shock after the health professional has determined that no one is in contact with the patient.
