, asystolia (ā″sis′tŏ-lē) (ā″sis-tō′lē-ă) [ ¹an- + systole]Cardiac standstill; absence of electrical activity and contractions of the heart evidenced on the surface electrocardiogram as a flat (isoelectric) line during cardiac arrest. In most instances, asystole is an electrocardiographic confirmation that a patient has died.
