n. pl. aris·tae (-tē) or aris·tas
A bristlelike part or appendage, such as the awn of grains and grasses or the process near the tip of the antenna of certain flies.

arista

  1. a bristle at the base of the antenna in insects. In some types, e.g. syrphids, it is larger than the rest of the antenna.
  2. a bristle-like structure in the flowering GLUMES of grasses (an AWN).
