2. a cell group in the hypothalamus, located in the lowest part of the infundibulum adjacent to the median eminence. Synonym(s): nucleus arcuatus of medulla oblongata [TA]
3. a variable assembly of small cell groups, probably outlying components of the pontine nuclei, on the anterior and medial aspects of the pyramid in the medulla oblongata.

arcuate nucleus

n.
Any of various specialized groups of nerve cells in the medulla oblongata, thalamus, or hypothalamus of the brain.

arcuate nucleus

A hypothalamic nucleus in the ventral wall of the third ventricle near the pituitary stalk. The arcuate nucleus produces inhibiting and releasing factors (adrenocorticotrophic hormone, beta-lipotrophic hormone, and beta-endorphin) for pituitary hormones.
Synonym: infundibular nucleus

The question as to whether the estrogen activation of the arcuate nucleus (Fos) is in the kisspeptin cells is an important one, since it has been shown that the positive feedback effect is generated here.

The leptin receptor is expressed in several hypothalamic nuclei including the arcuate nucleus (ARCN), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), and ventromedial hypothalamus [12].
One of the major regulators of food intake is leptin, a hormone released by adipose tissue that induces satiety via receptors located in the arcuate nucleus. Leptin crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts directly on two populations of neurons within the arcuate nucleus that express agouti-related protein (AgRP) or proopiomelanocortin (POMC).
Recently, neurokinin B (NKB) and dynorphin (Dyn) were found to coexist within kisspeptin neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) where they control the pulsatile release of GnRH [10, 11].
The modest reduction of long-chain acyl-CoAs within the arcuate nucleus (ARC) would increase the expression of both agouti-related peptide (AgRP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) and enhance feed intake (Obici et al., 2003).

The arcuate nucleus, located in the ventromedial hypothalamus, in addition to the pituitary gland, contains all the b-endorphin cells in the brain.
