The development of an embryo without the occurrence of fertilization, especially in plants.

apomixis

the development of an embryo in plants without FERTILIZATION or MEIOSIS. This method of pseudosexual reproduction is regularly used in plants such as garlic and the citruses. Similar processes occur in animals, where the term used is PARTHENOGENESIS. See also APOSPORY, APOGAMY and AGAMOSPERMY.
