a broad deep groove on the medial aspect of the left lung above and behind the hilum receiving the arch of the aorta and the thoracic aorta.

An obsolete term that formerly dignified a wide arched groove on the medial surface of the left lung that forms the "bed" of the arch and descending part of the aorta.
