anther(redirected from antheral)
Also found in: Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia.
antherthat part of the STAMEN of a flower that produces the male GAMETES and that is located at the end of a flexible stalk (the filament). Each anther usually has four ‘pollen sacs’ in which POLLEN GRAINS (HAPLOID) develop by a process of MEIOSIS. The pollen-grain nucleus divides into generative and tube nuclei, representing a truncated version of the GAMETOPHYTE generation found more clearly in lower plants.
