ansa of axis

An obsolete term for a nerve loop formed by the descending portion of the anterior branch of the second cervical spinal nerve as it joins the ascending branch of the third cervical nerve, forming the inferior root of the ansa cervicalis; it is located between the longus capitis and the levator scapulae muscles.
