Some of these markers are angiomodulin, hevin, several collagen types (IV, VI, XVIII), von Willebrand factor, cysteine-rich protein 2, and many novel genes whose functions are unknown and that are collectively named simply "pan-endothelial markers." An important conclusion of this study is that in cultured ECs, many of the genes expressed in vivo are repressed, a finding that should make one much more cautious when interpreting and extrapolating results obtained with cells in culture.
