an alkaloid produced by several species of western bitter lupins that can result in paralysis of the fetus and arthrogryposis if ingested by the dam in early pregnancy when present in concentrations greater than 1.4 mg/gm dried lupine.

Although alkaloids with the highest toxicity (sparteine, anagyrine and ammodendrine) were not detected, the results indicate that the major risk for intoxication could occur during pod growth and seed ripening, due to high total alkaloid content and larger abundance of lupanine in immature fruits.
