SOD1(redirected from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 1)
SOD1A gene on chromosome 21q22.11 that encodes a soluble, copper- and zinc-binding cytoplasmic protein, which is responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body, converting natural—but harmful—superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.
SOD1 mutations have been linked to familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
