amputation metaphor

A metaphor used by counsellors and psychologists when discussing the loss of a child with the parent(s). In the metaphor, the grieving parent is encouraged to relate the child’s death if a body part has been amputated; it is said to help people work through their feelings of loss, sorrow and anger.
