In ammonotelic organisms that cannot recycle N[H.sub.4.sup.+], it is more straightforward to measure protein synthesis and N[H.sub.4.sup.+] excretion in order to prepare nitrogen budgets (Hawkins, 1985) and evaluate protein metabolism (Langenbuch and Portner, 2003).
Most protozoan parasites are ammonotelic and excrete most of their nitrogen as ammonia.
