Public health A facility which is established in the US on a temporary basis to address “surge capacity” when natural disasters, large-scale accidents, or terrorist attacks have caused casualties beyond the ability of hospitals to handle them. These facilities have served a variety of functions intended to relieve pressure on local healthcare systems by serving as triage stations, caring for the “walking wounded,” or providing patient care when local healthcare facility infrastructure is damaged, as occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
