(2) A variant of acute leukaemia, where the peripheral blood reveals pancytopenia and few discernible blast cells on peripheral blood smears; leukaemic cells are seen only by a bone marrow biopsy.
Aleukaemic leukaemia is uncommon and histologically slotted into the non-lymphocytic, non-myeloid and non-monocytic category by the ICD-O code; cases of aleukaemic leukaemia and aleukaemic myelosis may be subsumed under myelodysplastic syndrome

Childhood hematological malignancies including acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and acute myeloid leukaemia are preceded by a period of apparent bone marrow failure.15 A study done in Pakistan showed that aleukaemic leukaemia
was present in 19%16 whereas another study showed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 4.8% and acute myeloid leukaemia in 3.8% cases.3 In our study malignancies were the third commonest cause of pancytopenia found in 10% cases.
