hypertension advancing rapidly with increasing blood pressure and associated with acute and rapidly worsening signs and symptoms.

accelerated hypertension

A hypertensive emergency, defined as a recent significant increase over baseline blood pressure associated with target organ damage, usually manifested by vascular damage on funduscopic examination, such as flame-shaped hemorrhages or soft exudates, but without papilleodema (which is the defining criterion for malignant hypertension).
