A level of additional payment to a junior doctor, which reflects the degree to which the post’s working hours do not comply with the New Deal requirements as assessed by the Improving Doctors’ Working Lives group.
• Band 3 (100% salary supplement): noncompliant with New Deal requirements (over weekly hours limit, or rest guidelines not met).
• Band 2A (80%): > 48 hours/week of work but under overall maximum, ≥ 1/3 of hours unsocial (medical SHO and PRHO banding, now FY1 FY2).
• Band 2B (50%): > 48 hours/week but under overall maximum, < 1/3 of hours unsocial (medical clinical fellow banding).
• Band 1a (50%): 40 to 48 hours/week, > 1/3 of hours unsocial.
• Band 1b (40%): 40 to 48 hours/week, < 1/3 of hours unsocial.
• Band 1c (20%): 40 to 48 hours/week, low-frequency non-resident on call.
