Q. Why should I take folic acid?

I heard that it is recommended for women to take folic acid every day. Should I take it even if I am not pregnant?
A1Folic acid is a B vitamin promoted mainly as part of a healthy diet to reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects (such as spina bifida and anencephaly), some types of cancer, and heart disease. It has also been studied for use in Alzheimer's disease and in chronic fatigue syndrome. While evidence of its ability to reduce neural tube defects in infants (when taken by the mother before and during pregnancy) is fairly strong, its effects against other conditions are still under study.
A2Folic acid helps the body build and maintain DNA and is important in helping the body make new cells, especially red blood cells. It is advised to consume 400 micrograms daily if you are not pregnant and if you are then to consume 600 micrograms every day.
A3foilc acid is a necessary building stone for creating nucleotides. the material that builds our DNA. most of the time we salvage nucleotides from things we eat (any thing that have cells ..plants,animals..). while pregnant, in the first month or two- the salvage will not be enough for the fetus and he needs folic acid. this is why it's recommended taking it. in our everyday life we have usually enough in our diet. but of course i know my diet- i don't know yours ...

Q. Why to take Folic Acid during pregnancy?

I am in the beginning of my pregnancy and the Doctor told me to take Folic Acid every day, why?
A1Folic acid can reduce your risk of having a baby with a serious birth defect of the brain and spinal cord, called the “neural tube.” A baby with spina bifida, the most common neural tube defect, is born with a spine that is not closed. The exposed nerves are damaged, leaving the child with varying degrees of paralysis, incontinence, and sometimes mental retardation. Recommended daily dose of Folic acid is 600 mcg.

A2Folic Acid is accential in making healthy babies, if i had of taken folic acid with my son he would not have been as small Dawson come out 3 pounds 12 ounces, The doctor's said it was the lack of Folic Acid for the umbilical cord to stay a nice size.
A3I agree with Melissa31 and i had a child that had anencephaly and it could have been prevented if i had taken folic acid.Since that pregnancy i have had 2 other pregnancies and as soon as i found out i started taking folic acid. My children i can say are healhty, so if your doctor recommended that to you i advise to please take it. I hope this was helpful.

A2Folic acid (vitamin B10) can be found in liver, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, whole grain cereal, green vegetables, citrus fruit, avocados, nuts, fresh herbs, cauliflower, broccoli, beans and more.
