monohybrid
(mŏn′ō-hī′brĭd)n. The hybrid of parents that differ at only one gene locus, for which each parent is homozygous with a different allele.

monohybrid
an organism that carries two different ALLELES of one gene. For example character A (controlled by alleles A 1 and A2) would produce a monohybrid GENOTYPE of A 1A 2, i.e. a HETEROZYGOTE. A monohybrid cross is one in which two parents are crossed to produce monohybrids that are then mated, or a single monohybrid plant is self-fertilized (see SELF-FERTILIZATION). Mendel formulated his law of SEGREGATION from the results of a monohybrid cross involving single characters in the pea plant.
