Preventive prosthodontics aims at avoiding complete
edentulism. It projects the overdenture as one of its treatment modality [3,5].
Edentulism assumed to be due to periodontal disease, although models with and without this assumption were tested in SEM.
Some authors (23, 35) observed higher prevalence of septa in partially edentulous maxilla than in totally edentulous ones and reported no statistically significant differences between the different types of
edentulism. However, other authors (9, 14, 36, 37) reported a higher prevalence of septa in completely edentulous patients than in partially edentulous patients.
Patients with obvious bone pathology, comminuted and unfavourable fracture(requiring open reduction and fixation), children below 10 years of age, maxillary and mandibular
edentulism were not included in the study.
The increase in
edentulism is driving the growth of the dental prosthetics market worldwide.
Untreated dental disease can result in
edentulism (partial or complete tooth loss).
