White, Ellen G

The founder (1827–1915) of the Seventh-Day Adventists, who advocated vegetarianism, exercise, cleanliness, and abstinence from alcohol, tobacco and sex; a sickly woman, she recruited John H Kellogg (of breakfast cereal fame) as the chief physician for her first residential health clinic, the Battle Creek Sanatorium.
