Up first will be the second biggest whirlpool in the world, The Saltstraumen - a rapid sprint across a 0.25km tidal split, where up to 400,000,000 cubic metres of seawater forces its way through a 3km long and 250-metre wide strait every six hours, with water speeds reaching 22 knots.
The brothers' final swim will be The Mosktraumen, an 8km point to point crossing between the islands of Vaeroy and Mosken across the strongest and biggest whirlpool in the world.
As expected, in experiments with water or with viscous ethylene glycol, the spinning platter swirled the liquid above it to create
whirlpools. But the throats of those
whirlpools tapered to surprising shapes at the platter's surface, the team reports in the May 5 Physical Review Letters.
"We find that a lot of men like the deeper massage of the
whirlpool, and a lot of women like the lighter massage of the airbath," says Russell Adams, vice president for business development for MTI
Whirlpools.

They note that any system with differential rotation -- rotation that shears apart adjacent circulating layers in the disk -- can generate such
whirlpools.
