[August F. L. Weismann, Ger. biologist, 1834–1914]
The theory that acquired characteristics are not inherited.
Weismannismthe theory, now considerably modified, which proposes that the germ cells are set apart at an early stage of the development and are uninfluenced by characteristics acquired during life.
