And these associations should organise cultural and educational competitions and lectures for all members of society explaining the goals and the benefits of
voluntary work. In addition, cultural and educational government institutions should play a greater role in encouraging students and employees to participate in
voluntary work activities.
John Rafferty, chief executive of the charity TimeBank, said: "Businesses are now realising that
voluntary work not only benefits staff, but also the company as a whole."
She commended the expatriate communities living in the Kingdom of Bahrain for their keenness on participating in the second edition of the
voluntary work award, reflecting Bahrain's drive to embrace all community through peaceful co-existence and the values that long marked the Bahraini society all along its history.
"Voluntarism is not confined to certain persons, rather it is a responsibility carried out by every one capable of offering money, dedicating time and energy and proposing ideas to ease pain and calamity of those suffering and improve their living condition in pursuit of social cohesion," Shaikha Fatima said in remarks on the occasion of the beginning of the Arab Forum for Empowering Youth in
Voluntary Work, which is held in parallel with the fourth Emirates Volunteer Conference in Abu Dhabi.
"The papers which were presented in the symposium will surely contribute to the development of the
voluntary work field in the Sultanate," Al Kalbani stressed.
Akram Mahmoud, a leader of a group of participants, said there is large number of people, especially among the youth, ready to participate in
voluntary work. He said such people only need properly publicized voluntary programs to embark on such schemes.
"Initially 20 orphans aged between 16 and 17 years will participate in a two-part programme to prepare them for
voluntary work - the first will involve a psychiatrist and the second will help them prepare for voluntary jobs".
Most of the 16 to 24-years-olds polled said they would happily stop watching TV if they were asked to do some
voluntary work.
He also asserted that the fields of the award include the "Best
voluntary work on individual level" and the "Best
voluntary work on group level".
They said the Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa Award for
Voluntary Work has contributed to encouraging various
voluntary work initiatives and shedding light on youth's voluntary projects.
