Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1. A cell-surface sialoglycoprotein encoded by VCAM1 on 1p32-p31, which belongs to the Ig superfamily, is expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium, and is involved in early inflammation. It mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and signals transduction, recruiting monocytes and lymphocytes to the endothelial cell surface, triggering a chronic inflammatory response linked to atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
