The most common cause of cough is upper airway cough syndrome (UACS), referred to in the previous ACCP guideline as postnasal drip syndrome.
Most over-the-counter cough suppressants and expectorants, and newer-generation nonsedating antihistamines, have little efficacy in patients with acute cough or upper airway cough syndrome (postnasal drip syndrome) and should not be used.
The term "upper airway cough syndrome" (UACS) is one of several new diagnostic terms introduced in the guidelines to replace older terms.
