USP22

A gene on chromosome 17p11.2 that encodes a histone-deubiquitinating component of the transcription regulatory histone acetylation (HAT) complex SAGA. USP22 deubiquitinates histones H2A and H2B, thereby acting as a coactivator; it is recruited to specific gene promoters by activators (e.g., MYC), where it is required for transcription. It is also required for nuclear receptor-mediated transactivation and cell cycle progression. It is moderately expressed in heart and skeletal muscle.
