(trans-trā'kē-ăl ok'si-jĕn thār'ă-pē)
An oxygen delivery system in which a small-bore plastic cannula is inserted directly into the trachea through a small surgical opening. The catheter is inserted at the third or fourth tracheal cartilages and approximately 3 inches of catheter is allowed to enter the trachea.
