transition state

In a chemical reaction, the unstable structures and energies of the reactants that result from the weakening of chemical bonds and separation of atoms before they recombine as new compounds.

transition state

intermediate, higher free energy stage than initial stage in the reaction, often one in which the reacting molecule is strained or distorted or has an unfavorable electronic structure.
