TERF2A gene on chromosome 8q21.11 that encodes a protein which is an integral component of the telomere nucleoprotein complex. It is present at telomeres during metaphase of the cell cycle and inhibits telomerase, acting in cis to limit elongation of chromosome termini; TERF2 differs from TERF1 in that its N terminus is basic, while TERF1 is acidic.
