a highly conserved bacterial DNA sequence found about 25 bp upstream from the transcription start site of genes, usually flanked by GC-rich sequences; binding site of transcription factors but not RNA polymerase.

a short CONSENSUS SEQUENCE generally to be found in the PROMOTOR in EUKARYOTES. The sequence consists of seven or eight NUCLEOTIDES: 5′-TATA(A/T)A(A/T)-3′. It is located about 25 to 30 base pairs UPSTREAM of the start of the TRANSCRIPTION site and serves as a binding site for RNA POLYMERASE.
