Sleeping Beauty

A fanciful term for a transposase that can bind to inverted terminal repeats and mediate precise cut-and-paste transposition in cells from all major vertebrate classes, so named because it was “re-awakened” from 10 million years of evolutionary sleep—i.e., synthesised from extinct transposase systems.
