The imperative of the
sistrunk operation: review of 160 thyroglossal tract remnant operations.
(6) Despite an adequate Sistrunk operation, earlier studies observed a recurrence rate of 3% to 4%.
Although the Sistrunk procedure includes a part of the hyoid bone, there was a discrepancy between the numbers of Sistrunk operations and the histopathological findings of the cyst with bones in the present study.
The imperative of the Sistrunk operation. Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg.
Results of the Sistrunk operation. Acta Otorrinolaring Esp.
The patient underwent
sistrunk operation. Histopathology showed thyroglossal duct cyst with stratified squamous epithelium infiltrated by papillary cells.
distribution, laterality and location of thyroglossal duct cysts and outcome of Sistrunk Operation in the management of thyroglossal duct cysts
The recurrence rate for thyroglossal duct cysts after a Sistrunk operation is 5% compared with 20% if the hyoid cartilage is not removed.13 The recurrence rate after Sistrunk operation was seen in 8% patients in our series compared to higher rates of 12.1%,1115.8% 17and 24%.9 This positive outcome may be due to the adequate hyoid bone resection and removal of persistent infra or suprahyoid tract remnants in cases of recurrent thyroglossal duct cysts.
