Any of various small, dark-colored biting flies of the family Simuliidae, the larvae of which attach to rocks in streams and other flowing waters. Also called buffalo gnat.
A Simulidium spp fly measuring 1–5 mm which sucks blood and causes haemorrhagic oozing papules, edema and lymphadenopathy which, in tropical Africa and Central and South America, is a vector for Onchocerca volvulus

The annoyance may be sufficiently severe to result in animals being injured or even killed while stampeding.
