She was a member of
Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society.
Sigma Theta Tau was founded in 1922 by five nursing students at Indiana University Training School for Nursing (now Indiana University School of Nursing) in collaboration with one of their instructors.
Within six years into her career she pursued an MSN in Nursing from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1977, and during her studies, was an active member of the
Sigma Theta Tau honor society.
The Zeta Kappa Chapter-at-Large of the
Sigma Theta Tau, International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society which includes the Schools of Nursing at Nevada State College (NSC) and the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) was the recipient of a coveted Chapter Key Award.
It is common knowledge among nurses in the United States that nurses are experiencing burnout due to longer hours, increased workloads and not enough staffing or resources to provide the optimum level of care to high acuity patients (
Sigma Theta Tau International, 2017).
She is an member of
Sigma Theta Tau International, zeta Delta CAL, Choctaw Nation Medical Reserve Corps, Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corp, American Psychiatric Nurses Assn.
Joining efforts with local
Sigma Theta Tau chapters and other East Tennessee TNA Districts, a panel of nurses from clinical and leadership roles in the community will conduct a panel discussion on ethics and current nursing issues.

Professionally, Stephens is a member of the
Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Zeta Rho Chapter and is currently serving as Chairman of the Governance and Finance Committees as well as serving as treasurer for the local chapter.
