spontaneous breathing test
,SBT
Temporary cessation of mechanical ventilation while a patient remains intubated with a t-tube in place. An SBT is said to be successful when a patient maintains an oxygen saturation of 88% or more; with an FiO2 of 50% or less, f/VT (rapid shallow breathing index) < 105, and a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) of 8.0 cm of water or less. When this occurs, the patient may be safely extubated.
