In biology and physiology, a self-regulatory control mechanism that operates by negative feedback. For example, when the blood glucose level rises in the normal person, the pancreas responds by releasing insulin, which enables cells to take in and metabolize glucose. The level of other hormones is also regulated by this mechanism.
