Service Increment for Teaching
Also found in: Dictionary, Thesaurus, Acronyms, Encyclopedia.
Service Increment for TeachingA special NHS levy given out as extra funds to NHS institutions that participate in training undergraduate students, which ensures that the NHS supports undergraduate medical and dental education, and that service providers do not have higher treatment costs simply because they support such education.
The SIFT covers the extra costs to the NHS of teaching medical and dental students, but is not a formal payment for teaching. SIFT is part of the Multi-Professional Education and Training budget (MPET), which was created in 2001 by the merger of the Non-Medical Education and Training Budget, the Medical and Dental Education Levy and the Service Increment for Teaching—all of which continue as separate elements.
