Semmelweiss, Ignaz Philipp
(zĕm′ĕl-vīs″)Hungarian physician, 1818–1865, the discoverer of the mode of transmission of childbed fever (puerperal sepsis) in the 19th century. Semmelweiss is a seminal figure in the history of infection control.
