Changes in absolute band (ABC) and segmented neutrophil
counts (ASC) (109/L) in healthy dogs (Group C), dogs infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Group 0) and infected dogs treated with: enrofloxacin (Group I); feverfew (Group II) and feverfew+enrofloxacin (Group III).
Between the modifications of the homeostasis, provoked by the physical stresses, we can detach the increase of numbers of leukocytes, mainly of the segmented neutrophil
Total white blood cell count (WBC), mean segmented neutrophil
count (MSNC), total lymphocye count, total monocyte count, total eosinophil count, total basophil count, total erythrocyte count (EC), packed cell volume (PCV), and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration were estimated using a haematological analyser.
The serum ALP activity was correlated with the leukocyte count (Spearman r = 0.69; P <0.001) and with segmented neutrophil
count (r = 0.75; P <0.001; Fig.
Outcomes measured included the duration of the illness, reduction of symptoms, and change in lymphocyte and segmented neutrophil
counts in patients with either viral or bacterial infections.
(2,10,11) It should also be noted that when it is uncertain whether a cell is a segmented neutrophil
or a band, it is recommended that it be assigned to the former classification.
The segmented neutrophil
, the rod neutrophils (young), monocytes and lymphocytes had no modification during the study.
Initial laboratory findings included the following: hematocrit, 26%; hemoglobin level, 8.8 g/dL; leukocyte count, 34,800/[mm.sup.3]; segmented neutrophil
count, 29,928/[mm.sup.3]; platelet count, 91,000/[mm.sup.3]; serum glucose, 160 mg/dL; blood urea nitrogen (BUN), 268 mg/dL; serum creatinine, 6.3 mg/dL; albumin, 1.7 g/dL; uric acid, 14.8 mg/dL; calcium, 6.9 mg/dL; phosphorus, 6.7 mg/dL; magnesium, 2.0 mg/dL; sodium, 113 mEq/L; potassium, 7.6 mEq/L; pH 7.28; bicarbonate, 10 mmol/L; base excess, -14.9 mmol/L.
Are there any situations in which we would need to differentiate a band from a segmented neutrophil
We drew 10 peripheral blood cells for the package: RBC, platelet, band neutrophil, segmented neutrophil
, normal and variant lymphocytes, two monocyte variations, eosinophil, and basophil.
While the patient had a normal WBC count, the differential showed a marked increase in segmented neutrophils
. These trends persisted over the next 24 hours upon repeat testing (Table 1).
The complete blood count results were as follows: leukocytes, 2240/mm3 (segmented neutrophils
, 44.3%; lymphocytes, 33.5%); hemoglobin, 86 g/L; hematocrit, 26.4%; and platelets, 126,000/mm3.
