Schaffer’s test

Schaffer’s test

An obsolete test for urinary nitrites that used acetic acid and potassium ferrocyanide, resulting in a yellow colour in the presence of nitrites; in currently preferred tests, nitrites (an indicator of bacteruria) combine with para-arsanilic acid to yield a diazonium salt, which when coupled with benzoquinoline forms a pink diazo dye.
